De twaalfde film van de toen onbekende Ingmar Bergman werd in België aanvankelijk onthaald als een pseudo-erotische productie. Niet helemaal onbegrijpelijk wanneer je de internationale poster bekijkt die zinnen bevat zoals “Men wilt under the touch of her lips” en “The story of a bad girl”. Harriet Andersson, de muze van de film, werd voor een hele generatie het symbool van Zweedse extase. Het was pas later dat dit poëtische betoog over onbegrip in de liefde de waardering kreeg die het echt verdiende.

In SOMMAREN MED MONIKA ontmoet Monika de jonge man Harry. Ze vinden in elkaar een manier om uit het dagelijkse leven te ontsnappen. “Let's go away and never come back. We'll see the whole wide world. Are you game?” Wie kan er nee zeggen tegen zo’n uitnodiging? In één zomer wordt hun relatie volledig verteerd: het jonge koppel beleeft een korte, maar extatische zomer op een afgelegen eiland. Kort daarna worden ze ingehaald door de realiteit, zet de kater in en volgt de ontgoocheling. Dit sensuele verhaal over jonge, allesverterende liefde betekende voor Bergman de grote internationale doorbraak.

In Belgium, the twelfth film of the then unknown Ingmar Bergman was initially received as a pseudo erotic production. Not entirely surprising when you look at the international poster, which includes taglines such as “Men wilt under the touch of her lips” and “The story of a bad girl”. Harriet Andersson, the film’s muse, became a generational symbol of Swedish ecstasy. It was only decades later that this poetic film on incomprehension in love received the appreciation it really deserved.

In SOMMAREN MED MONIKA, Monika meets a young man, Harry. They find solace in each other and keeping each other’s company is a way to escape daily life. “Let's go away and never come back. We'll see the whole wide world. Are you game?” Who could say no to such an invitation? Over the course of one summer, their relationship is completely consumed: the young couple experiences a short but ecstatic summer on a remote island. Shortly after, they are caught up by reality, and disappointment follows. This sensual story about young, all-consuming love became Bergman’s international breakthrough.
