Braziliaans regisseur Glauber Rocha vertelt in BARRAVENTO het verhaal van arme vissers in het dorpje Bahia. Wat ze vissen, wordt aan een spotprijsje verkocht aan een baas die langskomt vanuit de stad. Firmino is een boer die na enkele jaren is teruggekeerd uit de stad. Hij probeert de vissers te laten begrijpen waarom ze arm blijven en wil hen bevrijden van mysticisme, wat hij beschouwt als een middel voor politieke en sociale onderdrukking. In zijn overtuiging om het dorp uit de armoede te halen, stoot hij op bijgeloof. Het dorpshoofd Aruã, die toegewijd is aan Yemanjá, de patroonheilige van de zee, wordt door Firmino op het slechte pad geleid. Met tragische gevolgen van dien.

Rocha was een van de voortrekkers van de Cinéma Nôvo, een filmbeweging die nieuw leven blies in de Braziliaanse cinema van de jaren 60 en die de socio-politieke problemen in Brazilië aankaart. BARRAVENTO is een van de belangrijkste films van de Cinéma Nôvo-beweging. Rocha’s werk is beïnvloed door de volksverhalen en tradities van Brazilië, vaak in combinatie met uitgebreid onderzoek en politiek activisme. 

De film wordt voorafgegaan door een lezing om 19u00 over de Cinéma Nôvo door Wouter Hessels, docent filmgeschiedenis (KASKA-DKO, RITCS, INSAS), en is gratis bij je filmticket inbegrepen.

In BARRAVENTO, Brazilian director Glauber Rocha tells the story of poor fishermen in the village of Bahia. Whatever they catch in a day, they sell for next to nothing to a boss who comes down from the city. Firmino is a farmer who has returned from the city after several years. He tries to teach the fishermen why they stay poor and wants to free them from mysticism, which he considers to be a tool of political and social repression. In his conviction to save the village from poverty, he comes up against superstition. The village chief Aruã, who is consecrated to Yemanjá, the patron saint of the sea, is led down a bad path by Firmino, with tragic consequences. 

Rocha was one of the founding fathers of the Cinéma Nôvo, a film movement that brought new life to the Brazilian cinema of the sixties and addresses the socio-economic problems in Brazil. BARRAVENTO is one of the most important films of the Cinéma Nôvo movement. Rocha’s work is influenced by the folktales and traditions of Brazil, often combined with extensive research and political activism.

The film will be preceded by a lecture (in Dutch) at 19h00 on the Cinéma Nôyo by film history professor Wouter Hessels (KASKA-DKO, RITCS, and INSAS) and is included in your entrance ticket.
