Elia Kazans EAST OF EDEN hervertelt het Bijbelse verhaal van Cain en Abel en is los gebaseerd op het tweede deel van John Steinbecks gelijknamige bestseller. James Dean speelt Caleb, een gefrustreerde jongeman die met zijn broer Aron wedijvert om zijn vaders genegenheid. Aron is als ‘goede zoon’ de duidelijke favoriet en Cal blijft zich, ondanks ettelijke verzoeningspogingen, afgewezen voelen door zijn vader.

Dean, in zijn eerste grote filmrol, brengt de worstelingen van zijn personage echt tot leven op het scherm. Met zijn ongeremde Method acteerstijl doet hij het publiek de afwijzingen en strubbelingen die Caleb doormaakt helemaal meevoelen. Regisseur Elia Kazans keuze voor CinemaScope en kleur legt de stemming van de film tegen de achtergrond van Californië onnavolgbaar vast.

Elia Kazan’s EAST OF EDEN retells the Biblical story of Cain and Abel and is loosely based on the second part of John Steinbeck’s bestseller of the same name. James Dean plays Caled, a troubled young man who competes with his brother Aron for their father’s love. Aron is the ‘good son’ and clearly their father’s favourite and Cal continues to feel rejected by his father, despite his many attempts at reconciliation.

Dean, in his first starring film role, brings the struggles of his character to life with his Method acting style and really draws the audience in. director Elia Kazan’s choice of CinemaScope and colour inimitably captures the atmosphere of the film against the backdrop of California.

We screen this film in collaboration with MAS, in connection with their COMPASSION expo (from the 31st of January until the 31st of August 2025).

Visitors with a ticket from a screening from the MAS x De Cinema 2025 programme will receive a reduction on a ticket for the MAS COMPASSION expo. Vice versa, a ticket of the MAS COMPASSION-expo (from the 31st of January until the screening day of the film in question) will entitle the visitor to a reduction ticket (€6,50 instead of €9) for a film from the MAS x De Cinema 2025 programme.
