“Ik ben niet koppig. Het leven is koppig”, betreurt Delphine haar situatie in Éric Rohmers Gouden Leeuw-winnende LE RAYON VERT. Wanneer haar plannen voor de zomer in duigen vallen, weet ze niet wat met zichzelf aan te vangen. Verstikt door sociale angst, voelt Delphine zich overal als een buitenstaander en ook de zomerliefde lijkt niet voor haar weggelegd. Totdat ze op weg naar huis een man ontmoet op het station.

LE RAYON VERT is de vijfde film in Rohmers “Comedies and Proverbs”-reeks die gekenmerkt wordt door serene beelden en praatgrage personages. Ondertussen had Rohmer een gebruikelijke manier van werken ontwikkeld waarbij hij het project in preproductie uitvoerig besprak met de cast en hen zelf hun dialogen liet bepalen. Zo verklaarde hij dat hoofdactrice Marie Rivière grotendeels verantwoordelijk is voor de film: “Marie is the one one who called the shots, not only by what she said, but by the way she’d speak, the way she’d question people, and also by the questions her character evoked from the others.”

LE RAYON VERT is deel van De Cinema’s zomerprogramma ETERNAL SUMMER, ENDLESS NIGHTS, waarin zonovergoten ontdekkingen in contrast staan met het opzwepende hedonisme van de nacht.

“I’m not stubborn. Life is stubborn”, Delphine laments her situation in Éric Rohmer’s Golden Lion-winning LE RAYON VERT. When her summer plans fall apart, she doesn’t know what to do with herself. Stifled by social anxiety, Delphine feels like an outsider everywhere, and summer love isn’t coming anytime soon either. Until, on her way home, she meets a man at the train station.

LE RAYON VERT is the fifth film in Rohmer’s “Comedies and Proverbs” series, characterised by serene imagery, love-smitten protagonists, and chatty characters. By then, Rohmer had developed a customary way of working in which he discussed the project at length with the cast members in pre-production and let them decide on their dialogues. He stated that lead actress Marie Rivière was primarily responsible for the film: “Marie is the one who called the shots, not only by what she said, but by the way she'd speak, the way she'd question people, and also by the questions her character evoked from the others.”

LE RAYON VERT is part of De Cinema’s summer programme ETERNAL SUMMER, ENDLESS NIGHTS, in which sunlit discoveries are contrasted with the inciting hedonism of the night.
