9 jaar na hun toevallige ontmoeting in Wenen, treffen Jesse (Ethan Hawke) en Céline (Julie Delpy) elkaar opnieuw, deze keer in Parijs. Jesse heeft een bestseller geschreven over hun memorabele tijd samen en is in Parijs voor een boektournee. Het boek eindigt net zoals hun ontmoeting 9 jaar eerder: met de belofte om 6 maanden later in het treinstation in Wenen af te spreken. Jesse spot Céline in het publiek tijdens zijn lezing en de twee spenderen een uur samen totdat Jesse naar de luchthaven moet vertrekken. Wat is er gebeurd in de 9 jaren na hun ontmoeting? Terwijl ze door Parijs wandelen, praten ze over diep persoonlijke zaken, de liefde, hun werk, passies, politiek en de teleurstellingen in hun leven. Maar dan is de tijd gekomen: wat doen ze met de herkansing die ze hebben gekregen?

Regisseur Richard Linklater schreef het scenario samen met acteurs Delpy en Hawke, alle drie ouder en wijzer, wat maakt dat de dialogen onderbouwd zijn met (pijnlijke) waarheden, die enkel door jaren levenservaring naar boven komen. Lichtjes gekneusd door het leven krijgen de twee in dat uur tijd met elkaar de tweede kans om liefde serieus te nemen.

9 years after their fateful meeting in Vienna, Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy) meet again, this time in Paris. Jesse has written a bestseller about their memorable time together and is in Paris for a book tour. The book ends just like their meeting 9 years earlier did: with the promise to meet again 6 months later in the train station of Vienna. Jesse spots Céline in the audience during his book signing and the two spend the hour he has before having to go to the airport together. What has happened during those 9 years after their meeting? As they walk through Paris, they talk about deeply personal things, love, their work, passions, politics and the disappointments in their lives. But then the time has come: what will they do with the second chance they’ve got now?

Director Richard Linklater wrote the screenplay together with actors Delpy and Hawke, all three of them older and wiser, which substantiates the dialogues with (painful) truths that can only surface after years of life experience. Slightly bruised by life, the two main characters have an opportunity to finally take love seriously.
